Air pollution is the single biggest environmental health risk (WHO data), linked to 7 million premature deaths annually. Air pollution can suppress normal lung function in children and foetal brain development and is linked to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and dementia in adults. CleanSpace is a system for monitoring personal exposure to air pollution and helps to research the link between air pollution and chronic disease.
CleanSpace allows long term monitoring of air pollution to identify hotspots. This data can be used to research links between pollution and chronic disease.
The CleanSpace Tags have been tested by the Environmental Research Group at King's College London and the National Physical Laboratory.
CleanSpace uses machine learning and advanced algorithms to remotely calibrate the sensors and optimise the frequency of sensor polling.
CleanSpace Tags are portable devices which means they can be carried by individuals or easily installed in indoor environments to monitor near real-time air quality.
Drayson Health is based in the Big Data Institute (BDI) at the University of Oxford's Old Road Campus. Lord Drayson leads the Drayson Health team, which combines experience in AI, digital health and life sciences. The team is advised by an eminent Scientific Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Sir John Bell.

Digital healthcare company Drayson Health, welcomes the inclusion of CleanSpace™, a system for monitoring exposure to air pollution developed by Drayson Technologies in the UK as a case study in the Chief Medical Officer’s annual report on the health impacts of pollution.
The report underlines the need for action on air pollution as a disease prevention measure across the UK.
Professor Dame Sally Davies highlights in her report the need for better integration of health and pollution data to enable research and improve health. Furthermore, the report recommends that Clinical Commissioning Groups analyse local air quality and its impact on hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
CleanSpace has collected 54 million geo-tagged data readings on air pollution since its launch in 2015, the majority of which cover cities in the UK. CleanSpace is currently generating 3 million geo-tagged air pollution readings per month and is providing an important source of personalised information for people most vulnerable to air pollution. The CleanSpace system has been independently validated by the National Physical Laboratory.
Many of CleanSpace’s top users have a respiratory condition and use the system to avoid exacerbations of their condition by proactively managing the air they breathe.

The importance of indoor air quality monitoring is also highlighted in the report. In September 2017 CW+, the charity for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, announced a pilot using CleanSpace to monitor air quality on both the adult and neonatal intensive care units at the hospital. This pilot will form part of a wider initiative to create a ‘sensor rich environment’, that is anticipated to have a significant impact on critically ill patients’ wellbeing and their recovery.
