Edinburgh recognised as a 'leading European Healthcare AI Hub

The University of Edinburgh has been recognised as a leader in AI research, particularly in healthcare, through its establishment of the AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare AI with Real Data (CHAI). Funded by a £12 million investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), CHAI is led by Professor Sotirios Tsaftaris and focuses on developing AI tools to enhance early disease prediction, diagnosis, and prevention while prioritizing safety and ethical considerations.

The hub collaborates with researchers from the University’s School of Informatics, School of Mathematics, and College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, alongside the Bayes Centre, Edinburgh’s innovation hub for data science and AI.

Edinburgh’s broader AI ecosystem, including its role in the Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) and its contributions to projects like DataLoch and BREATHE, further cements its position. A 2025 Deloitte report named Edinburgh the UK’s leading AI city, highlighting its pioneering work in leveraging AI for healthcare advancements, such as improving patient care through better diagnosis and treatment. The AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare AI with Real Data (CHAI) at the University of Edinburgh was established in late 2024, following a £12 million investment from the UK government’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Launched as part of a broader initiative to advance AI research, CHAI aims to pioneer the integration of causal inference into healthcare AI, addressing critical challenges in early disease prediction, diagnosis, and prevention while ensuring safety, fairness, and ethical use of AI technologies.

CHAI was announced in November 2024 as one of five new UK AI research hubs funded by EPSRC, with Edinburgh securing the largest share of the £80 million total investment.
