Edinburgh recognised as a 'leading European Healthcare AI Hub

The University of Edinburgh has been recognised as a leader in AI research, particularly in healthcare, through its establishment of the AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare AI with Real Data (CHAI). Funded by a £12 million investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), CHAI is led by Professor Sotirios Tsaftaris and focuses on developing AI tools to enhance early disease prediction, diagnosis, and prevention while prioritizing safety and ethical considerations.

The hub collaborates with researchers from the University’s School of Informatics, School of Mathematics, and College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, alongside the Bayes Centre, Edinburgh’s innovation hub for data science and AI.

Edinburgh’s broader AI ecosystem, including its role in the Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) and its contributions to projects like DataLoch and BREATHE, further cements its position. A 2025 Deloitte report named Edinburgh the UK’s leading AI city, highlighting its pioneering work in leveraging AI for healthcare advancements, such as improving patient care through better diagnosis and treatment. The city’s interdisciplinary approach, combining expertise in AI, data science, and healthcare, positions it as a key player in European healthcare AI innovation

The AI Hub for Causality in Healthcare AI with Real Data (CHAI) at the University of Edinburgh was established in late 2024, following a £12 million investment from the UK government’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Launched as part of a broader initiative to advance AI research, CHAI aims to pioneer the integration of causal inference into healthcare AI, addressing critical challenges in early disease prediction, diagnosis, and prevention while ensuring safety, fairness, and ethical use of AI technologies.

Key Milestones and Development:

  1. Funding and Formation (2024):

CHAI was announced in November 2024 as one of five new UK AI research hubs funded by EPSRC, with Edinburgh securing the largest share of the £80 million total investment.

Led by Professor Sotirios Tsaftaris, a Chair in Machine Learning and Computer Vision at the University of Edinburgh, CHAI was set up to focus on causal AI—moving beyond correlational models to understand cause-and-effect relationships in healthcare data.

The hub is hosted at the University’s Bayes Centre, a hub for data science and AI innovation, fostering collaboration across the School of Informatics, School of Mathematics, and College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

  2. Mission and Objectives:

CHAI’s primary goal is to develop trustworthy AI tools for healthcare by leveraging causal inference to improve decision-making in areas like disease detection, treatment planning, and personalised medicine.

It emphasises real-world data integration, working with diverse datasets to ensure AI models are robust, unbiased, and applicable to real healthcare settings.

Key focus areas include tackling biases in AI, enhancing patient outcomes, and ensuring ethical AI deployment in clinical environments.

  3. Collaborations and Partnerships:

CHAI collaborates with academic institutions, NHS partners, and industry stakeholders to bridge research and practical healthcare applications.

It builds on Edinburgh’s existing strengths in healthcare AI, such as the Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) and projects like DataLoch and BREATHE, which focus on health data and respiratory care, respectively.

The hub engages with global AI research communities to share knowledge and drive innovation in causal AI methodologies.

  4. Early Impact and Recognition (2024–2025):

By early 2025, CHAI had begun to establish itself as a leader in causal AI for healthcare, contributing to Edinburgh’s recognition as the UK’s top AI city in a 2025 Deloitte report.

The hub’s interdisciplinary approach, combining expertise in AI, mathematics, and medicine, positioned it as a key player in European healthcare AI innovation.

Initial projects focused on developing AI tools for early disease detection and addressing ethical challenges, such as ensuring fairness in AI-driven diagnostics.

Context within Edinburgh’s AI Ecosystem:

  • CHAI builds on the University of Edinburgh’s long-standing reputation in AI, dating back to the 1960s when it became one of the first UK institutions to establish an AI department.

  • The hub aligns with Edinburgh’s role as a global AI leader, supported by initiatives like the Edinburgh International Data Facility and the city’s hosting of one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers, ARCHER2, used for AI research.

  • CHAI’s work complements other Edinburgh-led projects, reinforcing the city’s status as a hub for data-driven healthcare innovation.

Current Status (May 2025):

As of May 2025, CHAI is actively developing causal AI methodologies, with ongoing projects aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy and patient care.

The hub continues to expand its partnerships, focusing on translating research into practical tools for the NHS and global healthcare systems.

It is recognised as a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s leadership in European healthcare AI, with a growing influence in shaping ethical and effective AI applications.

CHAI’s history is still in its early stages, but its rapid establishment and strategic focus on causal AI position it as a transformative force in healthcare innovation.
